Top Paying Metropolitan Areas for Court Reporters

Court Reporters can earn an excellent wage in certain metropolitan areas.  For example, the chart indicates that this occupation earns $98,100 in the Portland-Vancouver-Beaverton metropolitan areas of the states of Oregon and Washington. The average for all court reporters in 2008 was $49,710 which means Oregon and Washington are paying almost twice the average salary.

All top five metropolitan areas pay significantly more than the median annual salary. But even among the top five cities there is a spread of almost 29% between the top metro area in Oregon-Washington and the fifth on the list which is New York City-White Plains-Wayne in the states of New Jersey and New York.

Employment opportunities are available in both metropolitan and rural areas though. The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that employment will grow by 18% during the ten year period ending in 2018.  The reduction in the number of jobs due to budgetary cutbacks in courtrooms and conversions to automated recording systems have been offset by the expansion of new job opportunities in the areas of webcasting and translation services.

Court reporters work across industries and provide services to court rooms, arbitrators, universities, businesses and organizations providing services to the hearing impaired. The choice of metropolitan area clearly impacts the amount of pay to be expected, but it’s also important to consider the number of job openings. For example, though the Portland metro area pays the highest wage, it employs 90 court reporters versus the fifth ranked New York metro area that employs 790 people.
