Court Reporter Salaries for Metropolitan Areas with the Highest Employment Levels

Court reporter salaries certainly vary depending on the geographical location of the job. For example, Columbia, South Carolina pays an annual mean wage of $38,590 compared to an annual mean wage of $60,610 in El Paso, Texas. El Paso pays 57% more than Columbia. Topeka and Beaumont pay close to the average for all court reporters which is $49,710 according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Compensation for court reporters is dependent on a number of factors. The choice of metropolitan areas affects the salary as the chart indicates. In fact, just looking at the salaries alone does not give a complete picture because the worker concentrations vary significantly.

For example, Columbia employs 220 court reporters for a concentration level of .063% but pays the lowest amount of the top five metropolitan areas. El Paso pays a higher average wage at $60,610 and employs fewer reporters at 150 or a concentration rate of .055%. When seeking a job at the highest pay as a court reporter, it is important to look at the number of available jobs, the number of court reporters compared to total area employment, and the average area wage paid. The actual amount of salary that will be paid no matter where employment is sought will depend on your years of experience, level of technical knowledge, and the number and kinds of certifications.

There are several different certifications like the designation by the National Court Reporter Association as a Registered Professional Reporter or the designation as a Certified CART (Communication Access Real-Time Translation) Provider (CCP) and many others.
